Review

If anything, Gregorian chant is the musical expression of a text. And how well has the Utrechts Studenten Gregoriaans Koor understood that. The precise articulation, the correct and understandable pronunciation and the thorough respect for natural stress of the words are the merit of conductor Jan Boogaarts, for whom Aurea Luce was the last recording after a 30-year cooperation with the choir. Too bad, though, that all those textual elements are lost during the lectures and psalmody, probably due to the acoustics of the Church of Our Lady in Houten (Netherlands).
From a musical point of view, there are positive elements as well, such as the choir's sound : very nice, although a bit too sweet and intravert for me. One is constantly tempted to close one's eyes and start day dreaming. That is not a real problem, of course ; you get similar impressions from many recordings, ranging from Silos to Solesmes. Nevertheless, I would have expected a more expressive performance in a contemporary interpretation.
The semiological approach was no doubt very well studied, but sounds a bit hesitant at times. The fluent neumes are not always very fluently performed, putting a bit of a strain on the melodies. But in all, there are a few extremely beautiful tracks on this CD. Notice the subtlety in the initial repercussion in the Introit Nunc scio vere, or the repercussions in the Alleluia Tu es Petrus, for instance. I missed that same approach in the Offertory Constitues eos, though. Another fine element in the choir's approach is the feeling of direction, for instance in the salicus. In contrast to that subtle approach stands the needlessly long quilisma notes.
But those are merely details, of course. The USGK is a bit traditional, but the most important thing is that they have a beautiful and inspiring sound. Just buy it.
